Serving Like Christ: Learning to Follow Jesus’ Example

Introduction to our 8 Part Series on Serving Like Christ

Jesus Christ set the ultimate example of service, a life marked by humility, compassion, and selflessness. From washing His disciples’ feet to giving His life as a ransom for many, His actions teach us that greatness is found in serving others. But how can we, as His followers, embrace Serving Like Christ in our daily lives?

In this series, Serving Like Christ, we’ll embark on an eight-part journey to explore what it means to serve as Jesus did. Each post will highlight key principles of Christlike service, grounded in Scripture and enriched with practical applications. Let’s take a closer look at what we’ll be covering:

A heart of service is filled with humility, love, and compassion, reflecting Christlike qualities.

1. Embrace a Heart of Service

Serving like Christ starts with adopting His attitude of humility and selflessness. Jesus taught, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45, NLT). We’ll explore practical ways to cultivate a servant’s heart, from small acts of kindness in your daily life to larger commitments, all reflecting the mindset of Christ (Philippians 2:5-7).

2. Use Spiritual Gifts to Serve Like Christ

God has uniquely equipped each believer with spiritual gifts meant to edify the Body of Christ. Whether your gift is teaching, serving, encouraging, or leading, discovering and using these gifts is vital to Serving Like Christ (Romans 12:6-8, 1 Peter 4:10). We’ll discuss how to identify your gifts and use them effectively in your church and community.

3. Serve the Church Body

As members of Christ’s Body, we are called to care for one another, meeting practical and spiritual needs (1 Corinthians 12:12, Galatians 6:10). This section will offer ideas for supporting your church family, from volunteering in ministries to stepping into leadership roles that build up the congregation.

4. Care for the Vulnerable

Jesus consistently reached out to the poor, marginalized, and needy, embodying love and compassion (Matthew 25:35-36). Following His example, we’ll look at ways to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked. Whether volunteering at a shelter or providing meals for a neighbor in need, this chapter will inspire you to serve where it matters most.

5. Serve in Love

True service flows from a heart of love, not obligation or the desire for recognition. Paul reminds us, “If I gave everything I have to the poor… but didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:3, NLT). Learn how to cultivate genuine love for those you serve and let it be the foundation of your acts of service.

6. Serve with Humility

Jesus shocked His disciples by washing their feet—a task usually reserved for servants (John 13:14-15). Through this act, He demonstrated that no task is too small or beneath us. This chapter will focus on the importance of humility, encouraging you to serve without seeking accolades, putting others’ needs above your own (Philippians 2:3-4).

7. Persevere in Service

Serving others isn’t always easy. At times, it can be exhausting, unappreciated, or thankless. But Scripture encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, promising that our labor in the Lord is never in vain (Galatians 6:9, 1 Corinthians 15:58). Here, we’ll discuss strategies to stay motivated and faithful in service, trusting God to bless your efforts.

8. Be a Witness Through Service

Our acts of service should point others to the love and glory of God. Jesus said, “Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father” (Matthew 5:16, NLT). This chapter will inspire you to serve in ways that create opportunities to share the gospel. Your actions can reflect God’s love to those around you.
