Nieces and Nephews: Blessed by Their Presence

When I think about the blessings of being an uncle, I can’t help but reflect on the profound impact my niece and nephews have had on my life, especially as I navigate the grief of losing my wife, Wendy. In Part 1 of this series, “The Biblical Call to Discipling as an Uncle or Aunt”, we explored the scriptural responsibility and joy of guiding the next generation in faith. This post will focus on how I have been deeply blessed by their presence in my journey through grief.

Jesus’ Love for Children

Jesus’ words about children carry such tenderness and truth. In Matthew 19:14, He says, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children” (NLT). This verse reminds me of the purity, joy, and simple faith that children bring into our lives. My niece and nephews embody these qualities, and I have truly been blessed by their presence, especially in the most challenging moments of my life.

How Their Presence Has Blessed Me

1. Filling the Void Left by Wendy

After Wendy’s passing, our home felt emptier than I ever thought possible. Wendy and I loved sitting together on the decks around our house, watching the world go by and enjoying each other’s company. Now, when I sit on those decks alone, the ache of her absence feels overwhelming. But then, across the road, I see my niece turning cartwheels in the yard while her brothers toss a football.

Though I wish Wendy were here to share those moments with me, watching them fills a part of the void. Their laughter, energy, and presence remind me that life continues and that God still provides joy in unexpected ways.

2. A Lifeline in Times of Grief

One particular night stands out vividly. I had gone to feed Wendy’s ducks by the pond, and as I stood there, the weight of my sorrow overwhelmed me. Tears blurred my vision, and I felt utterly lost.

Then, my phone rang. It was my niece, calling from her first dance. She’d spilled a drink on her dress and wanted to come see me. That simple call saved me that night. While she may have thought she needed me, the truth is I needed her more. Her call was a lifeline, reminding me that I still had a purpose and people who needed me.

Angels on Earth: Blessed by Their Presence

My nephews have also found ways to connect with me that I never expected. They’ve adopted my love for sports teams simply because I love them. Whether it’s asking Alexa for updates on game scores or chatting with me about a win or loss, their enthusiasm reflects their desire to share in my passions.

These small gestures have meant more to me than I can put into words. They don’t just love the teams; they love me enough to care about what I care about. In those moments, I feel a little less alone, a little more connected, and a lot more grateful.

I often think of them as my angels on earth. God has used their presence to remind me of His love and care in tangible ways. Their laughter, their calls, their companionship—all of it has been a balm to my grieving heart. They’ve stepped into the spaces that felt empty and filled them with love, joy, and purpose.

Closing Reflection on Blessed by Their Presence

The Bible says in James 1:17, “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow” (NLT). My niece and nephews are some of the greatest gifts I’ve received from God. They may not realize the depth of their impact on my life, but their presence has been a steady reminder of God’s faithfulness.

I am truly blessed by their presence. They’ve turned my mourning into laughter, my loneliness into companionship, and my sorrow into joy. Through them, God has shown me that even in the deepest valleys, His love never fails.
