The Sacred Roles of Aunts and Uncles in Discipleship

The Sacred Roles of Aunts and Uncles in Discipleship

As an uncle, I’ve come to understand the unique role God has given me in the lives of my nieces and nephews. Discipling them isn’t just about spending time together—it’s about guiding them closer to Christ. This sacred call to discipleship as an aunt or uncle is one that requires intentionality, love, and faithfulness.

In Part 2 of this series, “Blessed by Their Presence”, I shared how much my niece and nephews have blessed my life, especially during my journey through grief. Now, we turn to the practical ways we can embrace the roles of aunts and uncles in discipleship, being intentional in pointing the next generation toward a relationship with God.

Being Intentional: Conversations with Purpose

One of the key roles of aunts and uncles in discipleship is being intentional in our conversations. It’s easy to talk about what they want—movies, sports, or school—but discipleship requires guiding discussions toward faith.

For example, after watching a movie together, I often ask, “What do you think the message of that movie was?” or “Did it remind you of anything about God or Jesus?” One superhero movie sparked a conversation about sacrifice, and I used it as an opportunity to share how Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us.

Even during sports games, my nephews and I talk about teamwork and how it reflects the unity God calls us to as believers. These small, everyday moments become powerful opportunities to plant seeds of faith.

Encouragement: A Vital Role in Discipleship

Encouragement is one of the most impactful roles of aunts and uncles in discipleship. It’s not just about private affirmations—it’s about celebrating their efforts publicly, too. When my niece excels in school or my nephews show kindness, I make it a point to tell others about it in their presence. Hearing me say, “I’m proud of you,” in front of other adults gives them confidence and helps them see their worth.

William Arthur Ward beautifully described the power of encouragement:
“Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will never forget you.”

Encouragement also involves correction. If they act out or disrespect their parents, I lovingly address it. Supporting their parents’ teachings is crucial in my role. By doing so, I’m reinforcing their values and showing my niece and nephews that we’re united in wanting what’s best for them.

Ways to Encourage as an Aunt or Uncle:

  • Celebrate Small Victories: Acknowledge their achievements, big or small. Whether it’s a school project or a kind gesture, let them know it matters.
  • Praise Them for What they Do: whether it is opening the door from someone at church, making sure there is candy or every Sunday School table, or passing our bulletins. Acknowledge the good that they do!
  • Show Up Consistently: Being present at their games, recitals, or events speaks volumes. It shows you value their efforts and are invested in their lives.
  • Praise Their Character: Focus on who they are, not just what they do. Highlight their compassion, kindness, and perseverance.

Encouragement also means reminding them that God’s love is constant. I often share Philippians 4:13 (NLT): “For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Letting them know they can rely on God gives them a strong foundation in faith.

Supporting Parents and Guiding with Love

A vital part of the roles of aunts and uncles in discipleship is supporting their parents. My job isn’t to undermine their authority but to uphold it. If their parents have set boundaries or expectations, I back them up.

Correction is another form of love. It’s not about being harsh but about guiding them back to Christlike behavior. If my niece or nephews are disrespectful or unkind, I’ll have a gentle conversation with them about why that behavior isn’t acceptable. This shows them that discipline, when done with love, is part of following Christ.

They face the field where a 12-year-old boy in a football uniform with the number 50 plays, and a 12-year-old girl with long brown hair and glasses performs as a cheerleader.

The Power of Presence with Purpose

Being present is the foundation, but being purposeful in your presence transforms everyday moments into discipleship opportunities. Whether it’s a quiet evening on the back porch, a drive to church, or a shared movie night, these moments can point them to God.

Proverbs 22:6 (NLT) reminds us: “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.” Every intentional conversation, act of encouragement, and moment of discipline is a seed planted in their hearts.

Discipling as an aunt or uncle doesn’t mean being perfect—it means being faithful. Trust that God will use your efforts to nurture their faith and guide them closer to Him.
