Growing Together in the Word

Growing Together in the Word

Spiritual growth isn’t meant to be a solo journey. God designed us to grow in faith within a community, learning, sharing, and encouraging one another through His Word. Let’s look at growing together in the word!

In the early church, believers gathered to devote themselves to the apostles’ teaching (Acts 2:42), discussing scripture, and applying it to their lives. This created a vibrant, faith-filled environment where hearts were transformed, and lives were changed.

When we study the Bible together, we:

  • Deepen our understanding of God’s Word
  • Strengthen our faith through shared insights
  • Encourage one another to live out biblical truths

Let’s explore why growing together in the Word matters, how to overcome obstacles, and the incredible blessings that come with it.

Why Studying the Word Together Matters

Studying the Bible with others is more than just an activity; it’s a powerful way to connect with God and one another. Here’s why it matters:

📖 Shared Insights Lead to Deeper Understanding

  • Each person brings unique perspectives and experiences.
  • We often see truths we might miss when reading alone.
  • Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Discussion helps refine our understanding and challenges us to grow.

❤️ Accountability Keeps Us Consistent

  • Life gets busy, and it’s easy to skip personal study. But when you’re part of a group, you’re encouraged to stay committed.
  • Knowing others are walking the same journey motivates us to show up, engage, and prioritize time in God’s Word.

🙌 Spiritual Growth Happens in Community

  • In Acts 2:42-47, the early believers devoted themselves to learning together. Their unity and shared faith transformed their lives and communities.
  • Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together.” Studying together fosters encouragement, support, and growth.

🌱 Faith Becomes Actionable

  • Discussions often lead to practical applications. Hearing how others live out biblical principles inspires us to apply God’s Word in real life.
  • Example: A Bible study on generosity may inspire group members to serve together in the community.

Studying the Bible together isn’t just about gaining knowledge; it’s about building relationships, strengthening faith, and growing in Christ.

Practical Ways to Study the Word Together

Not sure where to start? Here are some ideas:

  • Join a Bible Study Group: Many churches offer small groups focused on specific books of the Bible.
  • Start a Reading Plan with Friends: Use Bible apps to create plans you can follow together.
  • Family Devotions: Set aside time to read scripture as a family.
  • Accountability Partnerships: Find a “Bible buddy” to check in regularly about your study.
  • Online Bible Studies: If distance is an issue, join virtual groups for weekly discussions.

Tip: Keep it simple. Consistency matters more than perfection.

Overcoming Barriers to Studying the Word Together

It’s easy to have good intentions, but real-life challenges can get in the way. Here’s how to overcome common barriers:

“I Don’t Have Time”

  • Solution: Schedule Bible study like any important appointment. Even 10-15 minutes a day can be life-changing.
  • Tip: Combine Bible study with something you already do—like reading during lunch or listening to an audio Bible on your commute.

😓 “I Don’t Know Enough”

  • Solution: You don’t need to be a Bible expert. Growth comes from asking questions and learning together.
  • Reminder: Even seasoned Christians are continually learning. The key is being open and curious.

🤷 “I Don’t Have Anyone to Study With”

  • Solution: Consider starting a small group with friends, family, or church members.
  • Online Communities: Join virtual Bible studies or Christian forums where you can discuss scripture.

😬 Fear of Judgment

  • Many people hesitate because they fear saying the “wrong” thing.
  • Solution: Find a group that fosters grace and growth, where it’s safe to share thoughts and questions without judgment.

🚪 Distractions at Home

  • Life at home can be busy, especially with kids or work demands.
  • Solution: Create a designated “quiet space” for study. Communicate with family about your study time to minimize interruptions.

Encouragement: You don’t have to be perfect. Just start. God honors every effort to draw closer to Him through His Word.

A Personal Story

After Wendy passed, I knew I would need all the help I could get, and I set out to make reading my Bible a daily habit. I set a goal in 2024 to read through the entire Bible—something I had never done before.

I started in Genesis and read straight through to Revelation. Believe me, it was a real challenge. After the exciting stories of Genesis, you hit Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy—not exactly page-turners. But I did it. I made it all the way through, and now I’ve started again.

How did I do it?

It became the top priority of my day. The first thing I do after grabbing my morning caffeine is open my Bible. I start my reading with this prayer from Psalm 119:18: “Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from your law.”

I missed one day in June because I had a terrible headache, but I caught up the next day. It has become such a habit that my golden retriever beats me to my office every morning, stakes out his spot, and goes back to sleep.

What I discovered is that this habit sets the foundation for my day. After reading my passages and a daily devotional, I go to the Lord in prayer. I promise—you won’t regret it.

If you’re looking for a reading plan, most Bible apps can help. But if you don’t have one and want a plan, email me at [email protected]—I’ll create one just for you.
