Why the Spiritual Realm Matters to Christians: What’s Really Happening Around You
This Isn’t Just Theology—This Is Your Life
Most Christians don’t think much about the spiritual realm.
It feels distant. Abstract. Maybe even unnecessary.
But Scripture paints a very different picture. The spiritual realm isn’t a side topic—it’s the backdrop of everything you experience. Your thoughts, your struggles, your temptations, your victories… none of it happens in isolation.
There is more going on than what you can see.
And ignoring that reality doesn’t make you safe—it makes you unprepared.
This isn’t about curiosity. It’s about awareness.
Because if there is a spiritual dimension influencing your life—and the Bible says there is—then understanding it isn’t optional. It’s essential.

God Created Both the Seen and Unseen
The spiritual realm isn’t imaginary. It’s not symbolic and it’s not optional.
It’s part of God’s created order.
Colossians 1:15-16 NLT
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation, [16] for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see- such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him.
God didn’t just create the physical world you can see—He also created a realm you cannot see. That includes spiritual beings, authority structures, and realities that exist beyond human perception.
This matters because it reminds us that what we experience in the physical world is not the full story. There are layers to reality that God has revealed, even if only partially.
And if God created both realms, then both matter.

You Are Living in a Spiritual Battle
Whether you realize it or not, you are living in the middle of a spiritual conflict.
Not a physical one. Not one you can see with your eyes.
But one that is real, active, and personal.
Ephesians 6:10-12 NLT
A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. [12] For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
This verse shifts everything. Your greatest battles are not ultimately against people. They are not just circumstances, stress, or difficult seasons.
There is a deeper reality behind those struggles.
That doesn’t mean every problem is spiritual—but it does mean that the spiritual realm is influencing more than you think.
And if you don’t recognize the battle, you won’t be ready for it.

There Is a Real Enemy at Work
The Bible doesn’t present the spiritual realm as neutral.
- There is opposition.
- There is resistance.
- There is an enemy.
1 Peter 5:8 NLT
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
This isn’t meant to scare you—it’s meant to wake you up.
You have an enemy who is active, intentional, and looking for opportunities to attack. Not always in obvious ways, but often through subtle influence—discouragement, temptation, deception, and distraction.
Ignoring that reality doesn’t make it go away.
It just makes you easier to target.

God Is Also Actively Working in the Unseen
Here’s where this shifts from heavy to hopeful.
Yes, there is a spiritual battle. Yes, there is an enemy.
But that’s not the whole story.
God is actively working in the unseen realm as well.
2 Kings 6:15-17 NLT
When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha. [16] “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” [17] Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.
In that moment, one man saw fear. Another saw reality.
God opened his eyes, and suddenly he could see what had always been there—God’s protection, God’s presence, God’s power.
The same is true for you.
Just because you can’t see what God is doing doesn’t mean He isn’t working.
There is more happening on your behalf than you realize.

You Must Learn to Fight the Right Way
If the battle is spiritual, then your response must be spiritual too.
You can’t fight unseen battles with purely physical solutions.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NLT
We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. [4] We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. [5] We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.
This is where many Christians struggle.
We try to solve spiritual problems with human effort alone. We rely on logic, emotion, or willpower—but ignore the spiritual tools God has given us.
If you don’t fight the right battle with the right weapons, you will stay frustrated and defeated.
But when you understand what’s really going on—and respond the way Scripture teaches—you begin to experience real victory.
