Digital Discipleship, Part 2: Shining Light in a Digital World

When Truth Goes Offline – Digital Discipleship

We spend over two hours a day scrolling, and yet half of what we read wouldn’t pass a first-grade science fair.

Every day, there’s breaking news about who got traded, who got canceled, or the new miracle pill that’ll help you lose ten pounds before dinner — and somehow grow hair while you sleep.

And I haven’t even touched politics. (Do you know how to tell if a politician is lying? When their lips are moving.)

But all jokes aside, it makes you wonder — if so much of what we see online is fake, why do we spend so much time filling our minds with it?

The internet’s loud, but not always right.

The Jerry Jones Incident

Last week, after another miserable and painful Dallas Cowboys loss, I woke up and did what any long-suffering fan would do — I opened Facebook hoping for a miracle.

And there it was: the best headline I’d seen in years — “Jerry Jones Fires Himself as General Manager.”

I nearly shouted hallelujah! I skipped my morning Bible reading and went straight to the Dallas Morning News to confirm the good news.

That’s when reality hit harder than a blitzing linebacker — social media had lied to me. Jerry was still the GM. My hope was crushed, my faith in Facebook broken.

Depressed and disappointed, I finally did what I should’ve done in the first place — I opened the Word of God. The only news there was good news, and unlike my feed, it’s 100% true, 100% of the time.

If only “truth” came with a verified badge.

The Real Truth Crisis

Let’s be honest — we live in a world where truth is optional and outrage is profitable.

We’ll fact-check a headline, but not our habits. We’ll question whether a post is real, but we rarely question why we believe it.

Jesus prayed in John 17:17 (NLT), “Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.”

Truth isn’t trending — it’s timeless. And it’s found in the one place that never gets it wrong: the Word of God.

Heaven doesn’t need a fact-check department.

The Bible Doesn’t Need Fact-Checking

The Bible doesn’t need editors, algorithms, or corrections. It’s not opinion-based, ad-driven, or crowd-sourced.

Psalm 119:160 (NLT) says, “The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever.”

Everything online changes — except truth.

The Bible doesn’t trend; it transforms.

The Word doesn’t go viral; it goes eternal.

No clickbait. No ads. No fine print — just truth, straight from the Source.

You are what you scroll.

Filling Our Minds Right

The more we feed on fiction, the harder it gets to recognize truth.

But if we spent even half as much time in the Word as we do scrolling our feed, our peace, patience, and perspective would look completely different.

Philippians 4:8 (NLT) says, “Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable.”

Maybe the issue isn’t what’s on our feed — it’s what’s feeding us.

One Scroll That Saves

Your favorite app might tell you what’s trending.

God’s Word tells you what’s eternal.

When you open the Bible, you’re not scrolling through opinions — you’re seeing the heart of the Creator.

John 8:31–32 (NLT) says, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

So tomorrow morning, before you grab your phone, grab your Bible. Because you’ll never regret spending time in the one feed that never lies.

And since every Cowboys fan could use a little hope, here’s a poem just for us…

Heaven’s update never crashes.

“Faith, Football, and Facts”

I woke up after Sunday’s game,

Still grieving, just a tad,

‘Cause watching Dallas lose again

Can make a grown man sad.

Then Facebook brought me breaking news,

The headline made me shout:

“Jerry Jones has fired himself!”

I nearly passed right out.

But truth be told, my joy was short,

The post was all a lie,

Jerry’s still the GM,

And the Cowboys still can’t fly.

So I closed the feed and bowed my head,

My trust no longer swayed—

God’s truth is still undefeated,

Unlike the team Jerry’s made.

Still undefeated. Every. Single. Round.
