God’s Everlasting Love: Nothing Can Separate Us
What Then Shall We Say?
Romans 8:31 begins with a bold rhetorical question: “What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?” It’s Paul’s way of saying, “After all we’ve just covered—how could we possibly doubt God’s love?” The previous verses laid out God’s purpose and plan. Now, Paul invites us to rest in that assurance with boldness. If God is for us—and He is—then nothing and no one can stand successfully against us.
This isn’t wishful thinking. It’s the foundation of the gospel. God didn’t withhold His own Son. Why would He hold back anything else that we need? Paul uses logic soaked in grace: If God gave you Jesus, He will give you what you need to endure. That’s not just a theological point—it’s an anchor for every moment when life feels overwhelming.

God Is for You
Let’s be clear: if you belong to Christ, God is not neutral about you. He is for you. That means He defends you, intercedes for you, and stands with you in your darkest valley. Romans 8:33–34 reminds us that no one can bring a charge against you because it is God who justifies. No condemnation stands because Jesus died, was raised, and now intercedes for you.
When the voices in your head scream failure, when the accuser whispers shame, when your own sin tries to disqualify you—remember this: Jesus is your defense attorney who never loses a case. He stands before the Father with nail-scarred hands saying, “This one is mine.”

When Life Tries to Convince You Otherwise
There will be seasons when the world and your own heart whisper lies. Maybe you’re exhausted from trying to parent a child who won’t listen and you’re convinced you’re failing. Perhaps your marriage feels like it’s slipping through your fingers, or you’re battling a temptation you never thought you’d face. Maybe you’re confused about who you are—your gender, your identity—and you feel like you don’t fit anywhere. Perhaps you feel like a victim of your past, carrying wounds that seem too deep to heal. Maybe you believe you have no redeeming qualities left, that your mistakes define you. Or, in the quiet of the night, you’re fighting thoughts so dark you wonder if your life even matters.

If that’s where you are, hear this: nothing—not your confusion, not your shame, not your mental health battles, not even the darkest thought—can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus. These struggles are real, but they are not stronger than His love. His love doesn’t just reach the polished and put-together; it runs straight into the chaos, sits with you in the mess, and pulls you close. You are not beyond redemption and you are not forgotten. You are not too far gone. Christ’s love held you before those things happened, and it will carry you beyond them.

The Love That Holds You
Romans 8:35–39 reads like a crescendo. Paul names everything that might make us think God has left: trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, sword. And then he blows the roof off: Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Not death nor life. Angels or demons or the present can’t separate us. Not the future or power or height or depth. Not anything in all creation.
That’s a declaration for your depression. For your grief and your diagnosis. For your child who’s walked away from the faith. For the spouse who doesn’t understand. For the friend who betrayed you. For every shadow that tries to block out the light of God’s love.
You are held.

Rest in the Security
God’s love isn’t conditional. It doesn’t expire. It doesn’t loosen its grip when you fall short. The same love that saved you is the love that sustains you. That’s why Romans 8 ends with such certainty. It’s not just that God’s love endures—it never lets go.
If you’re weary, rest in that. If you’re doubting, return to that. If you’re overwhelmed, cling to that. Romans 8 doesn’t promise a pain-free life. It promises a love-filled one. You can walk through fire with peace, because love walks with you.
