Holy LOLs: The Bible’s Funniest Moments

My last few series have been deeply emotional for me to write, touching on grief, faith, and the journey of healing. While those topics are important, I decided it’s time for a change of pace—to take a break and look at the Bible from a different perspective. After all, God has a sense of humor, and the Bible is filled with moments that will make you laugh, shake your head, or just marvel at how relatable people in Scripture can be. So we are going to start with Holy LOLs.

This series, “Who Knew God Had a Sense of Humor?”, will highlight some of the funniest, most unexpected, and most human moments in the Bible. From talking donkeys to sarcastic prophets, we’ll explore how divine wisdom and humor often go hand in hand. Here’s what to expect in this series:

  • Holy LOLs: The Bible’s Funniest Moments – A collection of laugh-out-loud stories hidden in the pages of Scripture.
  • Heavenly Hypotheticals – What if biblical events played out today?
  • If Bible Characters Had Social Media – Imagine Moses tweeting about parting the Red Sea.
  • Oops! Bible Edition: Divine Blunders (That Actually Weren’t) – When people messed up, but God used it anyway.
  • The Bible’s Awkward Family Reunions – Sibling rivalries and family drama, ancient style.
  • Prophets, Plagues, and Puns – The most surprising (and pun-worthy) moments in Scripture.
  • Biblical Life Hacks That Still Work – Timeless wisdom, with a fun twist.
  • So let’s kick off this lighthearted journey with our first post:

A cartoon-style illustration of Noah looking frustrated as two mosquitoes smirk while sneaking onto the Ark. In the background, two unicorns argue with Noah, one saying, “You never sent us the invite!” The Ark is large and wooden, with animals boarding in pairs under a stormy sky.
And this is why we have mosquitoes… and no unicorns!

Holy LOLs: The Bible’s Funniest Moments

When you think of the Bible, you probably picture epic miracles, profound wisdom, and life-changing lessons. But tucked between the parting seas and fiery sermons are moments that will make you chuckle—yes, even in Scripture, God shows He has a sense of humor. Here are some of the Bible’s funniest moments that might just have you saying, “Holy LOLs!”

1. Balaam and His Talking Donkey (Numbers 22:21-34)

Imagine riding your donkey to work, grumpy because things aren’t going your way, when suddenly your donkey stops, refuses to move, and after a heated argument… it talks back. Yes, Balaam was so caught up in frustration that he didn’t even flinch when his donkey said, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” (Numbers 22:28, NLT). The real kicker? Balaam just answers like it’s totally normal. No double-take, no “Wait, WHAT?!” Just a straight-up argument with a donkey. Talk about a bad day.

A cartoon-style illustration of Elijah smirking and gesturing towards the sky as he mocks the prophets of Baal. A speech bubble reads, “Maybe your god is on vacation… or in the bathroom?” The prophets of Baal look frustrated and confused, standing near an altar that remains untouched by fire.
Elijah: The original king of sarcasm!

2. Elijah vs. the Prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:20-40)

Elijah didn’t just confront the prophets of Baal; he roasted them with sarcasm hotter than the altar they couldn’t get to light. As they desperately shouted to their god, Elijah taunted, “Shout louder! Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” (1 Kings 18:27, NLT). Yes, Elijah basically suggested Baal was on vacation… or in the bathroom. If sarcasm were an Olympic sport, Elijah would have taken the gold.

A cartoon-style illustration of Eutychus slumped over in a windowsill, snoring with a ‘Zzz’ above his head. In the next moment, he tumbles out of the window, arms flailing, while Paul continues preaching passionately, unaware. A few shocked churchgoers in the background whisper, “Told you it was a long one!”
When even biblical sermons go on too long…

3. Eutychus Falls Asleep During Paul’s Long Sermon (Acts 20:7-12)

Paul was preaching late into the night, and a young man named Eutychus, sitting in a window, dozed off and fell out of the third story. The Bible says, “Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms. ‘Don’t worry,’ he said, ‘he’s alive!’” (Acts 20:10, NLT). Then Paul went right back to preaching like nothing happened. Moral of the story: even biblical heroes could preach you to sleep.

A cartoon-style illustration of Jonah sitting inside the open mouth of a giant fish, arms crossed, looking annoyed. The fish has a grumpy expression with a speech bubble saying, “Look, dude, I didn’t ask for this either.” Jonah sits uncomfortably on the fish’s tongue while waves crash around them.
Look, dude, I didn’t ask for this either.

4. Jonah: The Prophet Who Tried to Run from God (Jonah 1-4)

Jonah was told to go to Nineveh, but he hated the idea so much he hopped on the first ship in the opposite direction. Spoiler alert: you can’t hide from God. Cue the storm, the crew tossing him overboard, and a giant fish swallowing him like the ultimate “I told you so.” But here’s the funny part—after being miraculously saved, Jonah still complains when Nineveh repents because he wanted them to be punished. God even uses a plant to teach him a lesson, and Jonah gets more upset about the plant dying than he did about an entire city being saved. Drama much?

5. Sarah Laughs at God (Genesis 18:9-15)

When Sarah overheard God say she would have a child in her old age, she laughed to herself. And God, being God, called her out: “Why did Sarah laugh?” (Genesis 18:13, NLT). Sarah denied it, “I didn’t laugh,” but God simply replied, “No, you did laugh.” (Genesis 18:15, NLT). The ultimate divine mic drop.

6. The Disciples Forget to Bring Bread (Mark 8:14-21)

After witnessing Jesus feed thousands with just a few loaves and fish—twice—the disciples find themselves in a boat worrying because they forgot to bring bread. Jesus, clearly amused (or slightly exasperated), asks, “Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don’t you know or understand even yet?” (Mark 8:17, NLT). It’s like watching someone panic about forgetting snacks after attending an all-you-can-eat buffet. Jesus basically says, “Guys, really? You just saw me feed a crowd with less than this. Relax.”

A cartoon-style illustration of Moses standing before Pharaoh, looking frustrated. Pharaoh, slumped on his throne and exhausted, is surrounded by frogs, gnats, and darkness. Moses holds up a finger and says, “Okay, this time you’ll let us go, right?” Pharaoh sighs and rolls his eyes. The background includes pyramids and an Egyptian palace setting.
Okay, this time you’ll let us go, right?

The Takeaway:

These moments aren’t just for laughs (though they deliver). They remind us that the Bible is full of real people with real emotions—even the occasional grumpy prophet, sarcastic showdown, or sleepy sermon casualty. God isn’t distant from our human experiences; He meets us in them, sometimes with a wink and a nudge to say, “Hey, I get it.”

So the next time you’re reading your Bible, keep an eye out for the divine humor sprinkled throughout. Because sometimes, even in the holiest of texts, it’s okay to laugh.
