Living as a Witness: Letting God’s Love Shine Through You
God’s Ambassadors: Living as a Witness
As followers of Christ, we are called to be His ambassadors. In 2 Corinthians 5:20 (NLT), Paul writes, “So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, ‘Come back to God!’” This verse highlights a crucial responsibility we bear as Christians: to represent God in the world and communicate His message of reconciliation to others. Living as a Witness is very important in advancing God’s kingdom.

What is an ambassador?
But what does it mean to be an ambassador? An ambassador is someone who represents a government or authority in a foreign land, acting on behalf of that government, speaking its words, and upholding its values. For example, the U.S. Ambassador to Japan is appointed by the President of the United States to represent the country in Japan. The ambassador’s job is to communicate the policies and values of the United States to the people of Japan and to foster a strong relationship between the two nations. The ambassador doesn’t make decisions on behalf of the United States; they speak on behalf of the President and the government, ensuring that the message is conveyed clearly and accurately.
As ambassadors of Christ, we don’t speak on our own authority, but we speak on behalf of God, representing His message of reconciliation and love. Just like the ambassador who must be in constant communication with the home government to represent it properly, we must remain connected to God through prayer, study, and a relationship with Him. Our role is to share His truth and to act as His hands and feet in a world that desperately needs His love and forgiveness.
How will They Know
How will people ever know about Christ if we don’t share the message? The good news isn’t just for us to enjoy privately; it’s a message of hope that needs to be communicated to the world. However, before we can be effective ambassadors, we need to ensure that we are right with God and reconciled to Him. We must invite the Holy Spirit to work in and through us so that we can genuinely represent Christ’s love to those around us.

Being Right with God: The Importance of Reconciliation
In order to be effective ambassadors, we must first be reconciled with God. This reconciliation is not just a one-time event but an ongoing relationship. As we align our hearts with God, the Holy Spirit empowers us to live in a way that reflects Christ’s love and character.
Being a witness isn’t just about telling people about Jesus—it’s about living out His love in our everyday actions. Matthew 5:16 (NLT) says, “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” We need to be actively pursuing a relationship with God, allowing His love to fill us, so that it can overflow to those around us. Only when we are walking in that love can we truly draw others to Christ.

The Power of Our Actions: Letting God’s Love Shine
It’s easy to think that the most effective witness is a speech or presentation about Christ. But often, the best witness is our actions. The old adage, “Preach often, use words when necessary,” (often attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, though its origins are debated) reminds us that the way we live speaks volumes. Our actions, kindness, and compassion toward others create opportunities to share the gospel in a way that words alone never could.
When people see God’s love in action through us—whether through small acts of kindness or big gestures of grace—they begin to wonder what motivates us. Our lives, lived authentically and joyfully in Christ, become a testimony in and of themselves. This makes people want what we have: peace, hope, and love rooted in Christ.
But there’s also a time to speak, to boldly take that shot as Wayne Gretzky famously said: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” We must take the opportunity to share the gospel when the time is right. Don’t shy away from speaking the truth, but always ensure that your actions are consistent with the words you speak.

Practical Tips to Living as a Witness
- Live with Integrity: Let your life reflect the teachings of Christ. Be honest, kind, and loving. People will notice the difference and will be drawn to the peace you have.
- Be Open to Conversations: Look for opportunities to engage with others. Sometimes, it’s about showing genuine interest in their lives and being present when they need someone to talk to.
- Show Compassion: Jesus showed compassion to those in need—whether they were physically, emotionally, or spiritually struggling. Follow His example by showing care for those around you.
- Pray for Opportunities: Ask God to open doors for you to share your faith. Be bold, but always seek His guidance. Sometimes, the Holy Spirit will prompt you when to speak.
- Be Humble: Acknowledge your own need for Christ. When people see that you are not “better” than them, they may feel more comfortable opening up to you about their own struggles.
