Serving with Humility: Reflecting Christ’s Example
In our journey of service, humility is the cornerstone. In Part 5 of this series, “Serving in Love: Embracing Christ’s Heart for Others”, we explored how love fuels our acts of service. Now, we turn our focus to serving with humility, following Christ’s example.
What Does It Mean to Serve with Humility?
Humility means putting others above ourselves. Jesus, the Son of God, demonstrated this when He washed His disciples’ feet. In John 13:14-15 (NLT), Jesus says,
“And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.”
Serving with humility is not about seeking recognition. It’s about letting go of pride and embracing a servant’s heart.
Why Humility Matters in Service
Humility allows us to connect with others authentically. Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT) reminds us,
“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.”
When we serve with humility, we reflect Christ’s character. This builds trust and opens hearts to God’s love.
Steps to Serve with Humility
- Recognize God’s Grace
Acknowledge that every gift and opportunity comes from God. Let this awareness guide your actions. - Focus on Others
Ask how you can meet someone’s need today. Small acts of kindness can make a big impact. - Avoid Pride
Serve without expecting praise or recognition. Let your service glorify God, not yourself. - Pray for a Humble Heart
Seek God’s help to cultivate humility. Ask Him to remove pride and replace it with compassion.
The Transforming Power of Humility
Humility transforms our hearts. It also inspires others to serve. When we lower ourselves to lift others, we demonstrate the love of Christ in its purest form.
Serving with humility may not always feel easy, but it reflects the heart of Jesus. As you follow His example, remember that true greatness comes from serving others.
