Sharing Your Personal Testimony: Why It Matters

Sharing Your Personal Testimony: Why It Matters

In our first blog in this series, Embracing the Great Commission, we explored the call Jesus gave to every believer to go and make disciples. We unpacked Matthew 28:19-20, emphasizing the command to “Go” and the promise of Christ’s presence as we fulfill His mission. In this part, we are discussing sharing your personal testimony.

Now, we turn our focus to one of the most powerful tools you have for sharing Christ: your personal testimony. Your testimony is more than just a story; it’s a witness to the transformative work of Jesus in your life. It’s unique, impactful, and something only you can share. But why is it so important to be prepared to share it?

Be prepared to share your story—your testimony can make an eternal impact.

The Power of Being Ready

The Apostle Peter gives us a clear mandate in 1 Peter 3:15:

“Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.” (NLT)

Your testimony is a bridge that connects your personal experience with the universal truths of the gospel. It’s not just about telling people what you believe but showing them why you believe and how your life has been changed by Jesus.

When you’re ready to share your testimony, you’re prepared to answer the questions of those seeking hope, encouragement, or direction. Being ready shows that you take your faith seriously and that you care about the spiritual well-being of others.

Why Preparation Matters when Sharing Your Personal Testimony

Imagine someone asks you out of the blue, “Why do you believe in Jesus?” Would you be able to answer confidently and concisely? Having your testimony planned out helps you avoid hesitation or uncertainty. Here’s why preparation is key:

1. Your Testimony Can Change Lives

Your story is a testament to God’s power and grace. It can provide hope to someone in despair or clarity to someone seeking answers. When shared with authenticity, your testimony can resonate deeply with others and plant seeds of faith.

2. It Keeps the Focus on Christ

Preparation ensures your testimony highlights what Christ has done in your life, rather than dwelling on your past or unrelated details. It helps you stay focused on pointing others to Him.

3. It Helps You Overcome Fear

Many people hesitate to share their faith because they fear saying the wrong thing. When you’ve thought through your testimony, practiced it, and prayed over it, you can approach conversations with confidence, knowing you’re ready to speak truth in love.

4. Opportunities May Come Without Warning

Opportunities to share your faith often arise unexpectedly. Whether it’s a coworker, a neighbor, or even a stranger, being prepared ensures you can seize those moments to share the hope of the gospel.

Examples of Testimonies in Scripture

The Bible is filled with examples of people sharing their testimonies to glorify God:

  • The Samaritan Woman (John 4:28-29): After meeting Jesus, she immediately invited her entire village to “come and see” the Messiah. Her testimony led many to believe.
  • The Blind Man (John 9:25): He didn’t have all the answers but confidently declared, “I was blind, and now I can see!”
  • Paul (Acts 26): Paul shared his dramatic conversion story with kings and crowds alike, using his testimony as a platform to proclaim the gospel.

Each of these individuals was ready to share their story, and their testimonies became powerful tools for evangelism.

Encouragement for Sharing Your Testimony

You don’t need to be a theologian or a polished speaker to share your testimony. You simply need to be willing and prepared. Remember, your testimony is yours—no one else can tell it like you can.

So take the time to prepare, practice, and pray over your testimony. When the opportunity comes, trust that the Holy Spirit will give you the words and confidence to share it.
