The God Who Sees You in the Wilderness

The God Who Sees You in the Wilderness

When Life Pushes You to the Edge

Some pain doesn’t come from choices you made—it comes from choices made about you. That’s Hagar’s story. And maybe, in some way, it’s yours too.

She wasn’t trying to compete and didn’t ask to be part of a family drama. She was a servant, a foreigner, drawn into someone else’s plan—and then blamed for the fallout.

Hagar was an Egyptian slave in Abraham and Sarah’s household. When Sarah couldn’t conceive, she suggested something unthinkable by modern standards—Abraham should sleep with Hagar to produce a child. Hagar became pregnant, and what should have been a blessing only stirred resentment and jealousy. Sarah grew bitter, and Hagar became the scapegoat. Abused, mistreated, and cast aside, she finally had enough.

The result? She fled into the wilderness, rejected and alone, carrying the weight of shame and a child.

And that’s exactly where God found her.

Hagar’s Wilderness Encounter

Hagar’s story in Genesis 16 is raw and relatable. She was invisible in her pain—used, discarded, and left without support. But it was in that dry, desperate wilderness that God showed up.

“The angel of the Lord found Hagar beside a spring of water in the wilderness.”

Genesis 16:7 (NLT)

He didn’t ignore or shame her. He spoke to her by name.

And after that encounter, Hagar gave God a name that still echoes through the lives of the brokenhearted:

“You are the God who sees me.”

Genesis 16:13 (NLT)

In Hebrew, that name is El Roi—the God who sees.

Running Into Pain with God

Sometimes we run from pain. Other times we try to ignore it and hope it disappears. But the only real healing begins when we run straight into it—with God at our side.

I know this firsthand. After the loss of my wife Wendy, I had two options: avoid the reminders and sink into grief—or confront the pain and live with purpose. Our anniversary was one of those hard days. Instead of staying home and sitting in sorrow, I took my niece and nephews to the movies. We made a memory out of a hard day.

That Christmas, her favorite season, I made a choice not to decorate. That was her thing, and anything I did would have felt like a hollow imitation. But the next Christmas, I’ll start my own traditions—my way. Not because I’ve conquered grief, but because I refuse to hide from it. I face it—with the strength God gives.

Just like Hagar had to return and face her situation, we too can walk through pain without being defined by it.

What to Do When You Feel Invisible

When you feel unseen or unloved, here are some practical steps that can help bring truth into focus:

1. Call Out to God — He Sees You

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

Psalm 34:18 (NLT)

Hagar didn’t find God. He found her. You don’t have to have the right words—He sees your heart.

2. Speak the Truth Over the Lies

“You are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you.”

Isaiah 43:4 (NLT)

The enemy wants you to believe you’re forgotten. But God says you are seen, loved, and valued.

3. Let God Name You, Not Your Circumstances

“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!”

1 John 3:1 (NLT)

Hagar was labeled a servant, a problem, a mistake. But God saw her as someone worth speaking to, someone worth rescuing.

He Still Sees

You may not be in a desert, but the wilderness of grief, rejection, or emotional exhaustion feels just as dry. Hagar’s story is more than history—it’s a reminder that you are not invisible to God.

When the world looks past you, God looks directly at you. When your name is forgotten by others, it’s whispered by the One who formed you.

He is El Roi—the God who sees you.
