The Holiness of God
Introduction
Holiness is one of the most defining attributes of God. It sets Him apart from all creation and signifies His absolute purity, righteousness, and transcendence. But what does it mean that God is holy, and why does it matter to us as believers? This blog will explore the depths of God’s holiness, its significance in our lives, and how we are called to reflect His holiness in our daily walk.
What Does It Mean That God Is Holy?
The Meaning of Holiness
The word “holy” means to be “set apart” or “sacred.” When we speak of God’s holiness, we are referring to His complete and utter separation from sin and imperfection. Unlike anything in creation, He is perfect in righteousness, unmatched in purity, and beyond all human understanding. Holiness is not merely one aspect of God’s character—it is the essence of who He is. Everything about God—His love, justice, mercy, and wrath—is holy and completely free from sin or corruption.
“No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” (1 Samuel 2:2, NLT)
God’s Holiness is Beyond Comparison
God’s holiness is so great that even the angels in His presence acknowledge it continuously. In Isaiah’s vision, the seraphim cry out:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3, NLT)
The repetition of “holy” three times emphasizes the absolute, infinite nature of God’s holiness. Unlike anything else, God’s holiness is eternal and unchanging, making Him wholly distinct from His creation.
Biblical Examples of God’s Holiness
Moses and the Burning Bush
When Moses encountered God in the burning bush, God instructed him:
“Do not come any closer,” the Lord warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.” (Exodus 3:5, NLT)
This moment revealed that God’s presence sanctifies everything around Him. The ground itself became holy because God was there. His holiness demands reverence and acknowledgment from all who approach Him.
The Vision of Isaiah
Isaiah’s vision of God’s throne revealed the weight of divine holiness:
“Then I said, ‘It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.’” (Isaiah 6:5, NLT)
Isaiah’s response shows how encountering God’s holiness reveals our own sinfulness. It humbles us and reminds us of our need for His cleansing grace.
The Call for Christians to Reflect God’s Holiness
Holiness is Not Impossible
Some may feel that holiness is an unattainable goal, but Scripture tells us that God calls us to be holy:
“But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, ‘You must be holy because I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:15-16, NLT)
While we will never achieve perfection in this life, the pursuit of holiness should define our walk with Christ. Through the Holy Spirit’s power, we are enabled to grow in holiness, conforming more and more to the image of Christ.
Holiness Requires Separation from Sin
To live holy lives, we must set ourselves apart from sin. Paul exhorts believers:
“Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1, NLT)
This does not mean we isolate ourselves from the world, but rather that we refuse to conform to sinful patterns. Our lives should reflect God’s righteousness and purity in our thoughts, actions, and relationships.
The Role of the Holy Spirit in Our Holiness
We cannot attain holiness on our own. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live in righteousness:
“For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.” (Hebrews 10:10, NLT)
Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are made positionally holy before God. However, through the process of sanctification, the Holy Spirit works within us daily, helping us live out this holiness practically in our lives.
Why God’s Holiness Matters
Holiness Leads to True Worship
Recognizing God’s holiness leads us to a deeper level of worship. True worship is not about routine practices but about approaching God with reverence and awe:
“Worship the Lord in all his holy splendor. Let all the earth tremble before him.” (Psalm 96:9, NLT)
Understanding His holiness transforms how we pray, sing, and live our lives in devotion to Him.
God’s Holiness Shows Our Need for a Savior
Without Christ, we could never stand before a holy God. The awareness of our sinfulness should drive us to gratitude for salvation through Jesus:
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” (Romans 3:23, NLT)
But through Jesus, we can be made righteous in God’s sight and approach His throne with confidence.
“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” (Hebrews 4:16, NLT)
