The Power of Presence: Being There Matters

The Power of Presence: Being There Matters

In part three of this series, The Sacred Roles of Aunts and Uncles in Discipleship, we explored the unique ways aunts and uncles can disciple their nieces and nephews. Today, I want to dive deeper into one critical aspect of that role: the power of presence.

Being there—really being present—is one of the greatest gifts you can give a child. It’s not just about showing up; it’s about making every moment count. My nieces and nephews know they are always welcome at my house, whether they’re stopping by for a visit, a quick chat, or to go for a drive in the convertible.

Showing Up for Their Moments

Whether it’s a football game, a choir concert, or a church event, I make it a priority to be there. I’ll never forget sitting in the stands, cheering loudly as my nephew finally got in the game. Or the pride I felt watching my niece sing her heart out during her concert choir performance or how hard she cheers at her games. Those moments are unforgettable—not just for me but for them too.

Birthdays and holidays hold a special place in my heart. Gathering around the table, sharing laughs, and building memories make these celebrations priceless. Just last year, my youngest nephew told me his favorite thing about Christmas wasn’t the presents but “hanging out with Uncle Raymond.” Moments like that remind me how much my presence matters.

Everyday Presence Matters Too

The power of presence is not just about the big events. The little, everyday moments are just as powerful. Sometimes, it’s a spontaneous visit to my house. Other times, it’s just being a listening ear when they need to vent or talk about life. Sometimes its realizing they are upset and not saying a word but just letting them know I am there for them.

Being available teaches them they are loved and supported no matter what. It shows them that someone they trust will always be there for them, which is exactly what Christ calls us to do as we disciple others.

The Presence of Christ in Everyday Life

Our presence in their lives reflects the love and presence of Christ. Jesus said in Matthew 18:20 (NLT), “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” When we show up for the children in our lives, we’re modeling Christ’s example of being present, loving, and intentional.

The Impact of Being Present

When you’re present, you’re creating memories, building trust, and strengthening bonds. They’ll remember your laughter at the Thanksgiving table, your cheers from the stands, and the quiet moments spent together just talking. You’re not just their aunt or uncle—you’re a safe place and a constant in their lives.

As Maya Angelou wisely said, “At the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.” Your presence leaves a mark on their hearts, one they’ll carry with them throughout their lives.

Being present is how we show love, support, and encouragement in tangible ways. It’s how we fulfill the role of guiding them toward faith in Christ, one moment at a time.
