Walking in the Spirit: How to Live Every Step with God
A Journey, Not a Sprint – What It Really Means to Walk in the Spirit
Walking in the Spirit isn’t about becoming a super-Christian—it’s about staying close to the One who leads. Galatians 5:16 says, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” It isn’t about floating through life with perfect peace and a smile plastered to your face. It’s about a daily walk, one step at a time, where the Holy Spirit guides your decisions, your responses, and your direction.
It’s not about doing everything right. It is about walking in the Spirit.

It’s Not About Perfection—It’s About Surrender
Here’s the unexpected truth: the Holy Spirit doesn’t always lead us toward comfort or success. Sometimes, He leads us away from it for our protection.
Not long ago, I was offered what seemed like the perfect job. A former colleague had recommended me to a rising crypto company. The offer was amazing—25% more salary, fully remote, incredible benefits, and pre-IPO stock options. On paper, it was the kind of job you say “yes” to immediately. But something didn’t sit right in my spirit.
I spent the weekend praying, talking with my wife Wendy, and seeking peace. Sitting on our back porch, I still didn’t have any. That was the answer. The Holy Spirit was clearly directing me to say “no.” On Monday, I declined.
They sweetened the deal—more money, more perks. I prayed again. Same answer: no peace. So I stuck with God’s “no.”
A year later, that company shut down. No IPO, no jobs and no retirement security. Just God’s mercy showing up in His guidance.

The Spirit Leads Through Pain as Much as Through Opportunity
Saying “no” to a job is one thing. Walking through grief is another. After Wendy passed away, I cried out to God in every emotion imaginable—anger, loneliness, despair, confusion. I kept asking, “Why am I still here?”
And in my spirit, I heard it—not audibly, but undeniably: “I’m not done with you yet.”
That quiet voice gave birth to Disciple Blueprint. Since then, I’ve written two books—The Greater the Love, The Deeper the Grief and Confessions of a Pray-er to Be Named Later. I’ve also published a Bible study on the Holy Spirit called Unstoppable. None of that came from my strength. It came from walking in the Spirit through the valley of loss.

Three Ways to Know You’re Walking in the Spirit
1. Peace That Guards and Guides
Philippians 4:7 reminds us that the peace of God will “guard your hearts and minds.” Peace isn’t a bonus feature of faith—it’s often the Spirit’s most recognizable signal. When something doesn’t align with His will, He lets you feel it. When something does, He covers it in peace.
2. Promptings That Are Biblical and Loving
The Spirit will never contradict Scripture. If you’re prompted to act, speak, give, or forgive—and it’s consistent with God’s Word and motivated by love—that’s likely the Spirit speaking.
But His promptings aren’t always dramatic. Sometimes they’re a quiet nudge: “Reach out to that person.” “Don’t say that.” “Pray right now.” He speaks, and when we listen, we grow.
3. Fruit That Grows Over Time
Galatians 5:22–23 describes the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. You won’t manifest all nine overnight. But over time, others will begin to notice.
Your walk will start to look different—not perfect, but Spirit-shaped.

How to Start Walking in the Spirit Today
If you want to walk in the Spirit, you don’t need a spiritual retreat or a dramatic experience. You need daily surrender.
Here are a few ways to begin:
-
Start your day with a simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, lead me today.”
-
Pause and ask before making decisions—big or small.
-
Stay in God’s Word so you can discern His voice.
-
Keep a journal of times when you sense His prompting and the outcome.
-
Surround yourself with Spirit-led people who can encourage and confirm His leading.
You won’t get it right every time. But over time, your steps will grow more in sync with His direction.

Final Word – He’s Not Done With You Yet
The words that kept me going after losing my wife still echo today: “I’m not done with you yet.” And if you’re still breathing, He’s not done with you either.
Walking in the Spirit is not reserved for pastors or missionaries. It’s for anyone who wants to live their life with God, not just for God.
So… are you ready to take the first step?
