Watering the Seed: Keeping the Door Open
“I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.” – 1 Corinthians 3:6 (NLT)
When it comes to leading someone to Christ, planting is only the beginning. The next step is just as vital—watering the seed. Planting opens the door. Watering keeps it open.
Watering isn’t only about continuing conversations about faith. It’s about living in such a way that the person sees Christ in you long after the words are gone. It’s about cultivating trust, consistency, compassion, and presence.
Let’s look at what watering might look like for three different types of people—and how God can use your life as the living evidence of the Gospel.

For Those with No Real Concept of Christ
They don’t know much about the Bible. They haven’t grown up in church. To them, Christianity might seem foreign—or irrelevant.
“Preach always, use words when necessary.” – St. Francis of Assisi (attributed)
How do you water the seed here?
-
Be consistently kind and dependable. Let them experience the fruit of the Spirit before they understand the source.
-
Live your joy out loud. When you model joy, peace, patience, and kindness in a culture of cynicism and chaos, people notice.
-
Serve them sacrificially. Mow a lawn. Cook a meal. Offer help without strings. When they ask, “Why are you so helpful?”—the door opens wider.
Keep the conversation going:
-
“I’ve found so much peace in my relationship with Jesus. Can I share what that looks like for me?”
-
“You mentioned life feeling a little aimless. I’ve felt that too before faith gave me direction.”
-
“You know, creation always reminds me there’s a Creator behind all this beauty. Have you ever thought about that?”
Your life is the sermon they’re watching. Your actions are the water that keeps the soil soft.

For Those Who Know About Jesus, But Haven’t Accepted Him
They’ve heard the Gospel. Maybe they’ve even sat in a few services. But they haven’t made it personal. There’s hesitancy, or maybe hurt. They’re not sure Jesus is for them.
How do you water the seed here?
-
Demonstrate grace. When they mess up, show them the same unearned love Christ shows you. Let your response model the Gospel.
-
Be transparent. Don’t pretend to have it all together. Let them see your faith in process.
-
Show how your faith shapes your life. Not by preaching, but by how you handle stress, conflict, and difficulty.
Keep the conversation going:
-
“I used to think Jesus was for other people too, but then I realized He died for me personally.”
-
“It’s not about religion—it’s about a relationship. That changed everything for me.”
-
“If you ever want to talk more about what following Jesus looks like, I’d love that.”
Let them see how Christ is real in your everyday life. Your life can help move them from knowing about Jesus to wanting to know Him personally.

For Those Who Are Close—But Holding Back
They might be attending church. Maybe they’re “almost convinced.” But something’s keeping them from stepping forward—fear, pride, uncertainty, or a deep-rooted question they haven’t voiced yet.
How do you water the seed here?
-
Ask gentle questions. Invite deeper thought without pressure.
-
Be patient. Rushing someone into a decision can close the door.
-
Invite them into Christian community. It’s one thing to hear about Jesus; it’s another to experience Him through His people.
Keep the conversation going:
-
“What do you think is holding you back from following Christ fully?”
-
“Do you ever feel like you’re being nudged to take a step of faith?”
-
“If I could pray for one thing for you right now, what would it be?”
Here, your presence matters just as much as your words. When they’re almost ready to walk through the door, you don’t push—you gently hold it open.

Watering Is a Lifestyle
To water well, you must stay connected to the Source.
Jesus said in John 7:38 (NLT), “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”
When you walk closely with Christ, His life pours out through you—into conversations, into actions, into consistent love that slowly draws people closer to Him.
So keep the door open. Be present and faithful. Be real.
And remember—you don’t make the seed grow. God does. But He uses your watering to make room for the miracle.
