What Does the Bible Say About the Spiritual Realm?

What Does the Bible Say About the Spiritual Realm?

What If We Don’t Know as Much as We Think?

When it comes to the spiritual realm, people tend to fall into two extremes.

Some ignore it completely.

Others fill in the gaps with speculation, assumptions, and things the Bible never actually says.

Neither approach is helpful.

The truth is, the Bible does reveal the spiritual realm—but it doesn’t tell us everything.

And that’s intentional.

The Bible Is Clear—But Not Exhaustive

Scripture is not silent about the unseen world.

We see angels, spiritual conflict, and even glimpses behind the scenes.

But we are never given a complete, detailed explanation of how everything works.

In Colossians 1:16 (NLT), we’re told:

“Through him God created everything… He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see…”

That means the spiritual realm is real.

But the Bible doesn’t try to satisfy every curiosity about it.

It gives us truth—but not full disclosure.

There Are Things God Has Chosen Not to Reveal

This is where we need to stay grounded.

In Deuteronomy 29:29 (NLT), we’re told:

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God…”

That’s not frustrating—it’s protective.

There are aspects of the spiritual realm that God has not revealed.

Not because they don’t exist, but because we don’t need to know them.

Our job isn’t to fill in those gaps.

It’s to trust what God has already made clear.

Scripture Gives Us Glimpses—Not a Full Map

There are moments in the Bible where we see behind the curtain.

In Daniel 10:12–13 (NLT), an angel says:

“Since the first day you began to pray… your request has been heard in heaven. But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way…”

And in Job 1:6–7 (NLT), we’re told:

“One day the members of the heavenly court came… and the accuser, Satan, came with them.”

But notice something:

These are snapshots—not explanations.

We are shown that something is happening…

but not how it all works.

That should tell us something important:

God reveals enough to inform us—but not everything to satisfy our curiosity.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

If we go beyond what Scripture says, we risk believing things that aren’t true.

If we ignore what Scripture says, we miss what is true.

Both lead to confusion.

That’s why this matters.

Because when it comes to the spiritual realm, clarity comes from staying rooted in the Bible—not imagination, not culture, and not speculation.

Stay Within What God Has Said

Here’s the bottom line:

We don’t need to know everything about the spiritual realm.

But we do need to understand what God has revealed.

In 1 Corinthians 13:12 (NLT), Paul reminds us:

“Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror…”

That means some questions won’t be answered and some details won’t be explained.

And that’s okay.

Because what God has revealed is enough for us to live with clarity, confidence, and truth.

Continue the Series

Now that we’ve established what the Bible says—and what it doesn’t—the next step is to look more closely at who exists in this unseen realm.

Next, we’ll begin with angels:

what they are, what they do, and what most people misunderstand about them.
