What Satan Can and Can’t Do to a Christian: Stop Living in Fear

Let’s Clear This Up Once and For All

Today we are looking at what Satan can and can’t do.

When it comes to Satan, most Christians fall into one of two camps.

They either think he’s behind everything…

or they don’t think about him at all.

Some people are afraid of him.

Others ignore him completely.

Both are mistakes.

The truth is right in the middle.

Satan is real.

He is active.

But he is also limited.

And if you don’t understand what he can and can’t do, you’ll either live in fear… or live unprepared.

He can suggest—but you still choose.

What Satan CAN Do

Let’s start here so we stay grounded in reality.

Satan is not powerless.

1 Peter 5:8 NLT
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

John 8:44 NLT
For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Revelation 12:10 NLT
Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, “It has come at last- salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth- the one who accuses them before our God day and night.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:

  • That thought: “I will quit tomorrow…”

  • That pressure: “Everyone else is doing it…”

  • That voice: “You’ll never change…”

  • That weight: “After what you did, God doesn’t want you anymore…”

  • He tempts.
  • He deceives.
  • He accuses.
  • He influences.

But don’t miss this:

Influence is not control.

He can suggest…

but he cannot force.

But even in temptation, there is a limit.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

That means:

  • You are never trapped

  • You are never forced

  • There is always a way out

You may not like the way out.

It may be hard.

But it is always there.

Satan can tempt you…

but he cannot corner you.

What Satan CANNOT Do

This is where a lot of fear needs to die.

If you are a believer—if you belong to Christ—there are things Satan simply cannot do.

1 John 4:4 NLT
But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

He CANNOT:

  • Possess you

  • Force you to sin

  • Read your mind

  • Separate you from God

  • Overpower Christ in you

Romans 8:38-39 NLT
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. [39] No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Colossians 2:15 NLT
In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

Nothing means nothing.

  • Not Satan.
  • Not your past.
  • Not your failures.

Satan is not fighting for victory.

He’s already lost.

Even his power has limits—God sets them.

Satan Is Not Everywhere (And That Matters)

Satan is not God.

He is not omnipresent.

That means he can only be in one place at a time.

So let’s be honest for a second.

Satan himself is probably not spending his day trying to trip you up personally.

He’s not bouncing from the White House to Tehran to your living room in five minutes.

If he’s dealing with President Trump or the leader of Iran… he’s not also sitting in your car while you’re arguing with your spouse.

That should bring clarity.

So what’s going on when you feel tempted?

  • Sometimes it could be demonic influence in general

  • Most of the time, it’s something closer to home

The Real Battle: Your Flesh vs. Your New Life

Not everything is Satan.

And this is where a lot of people get it wrong.

James 1:14-15 NLT
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. [15] These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

You have a sin nature—your old self.

Even after salvation, that old self doesn’t just disappear.

There is a real internal battle happening.

Paul described it like this:

Romans 7:15-20 NLT
I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. [16] But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. [17] So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. [18] And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. [19] I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. [20] But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

He said he didn’t do what he knew was right…

and he kept doing what he knew was wrong.

That’s not Satan controlling him.

That’s the struggle between the old nature and the new life in Christ.

So let’s be clear:

  • Some temptation is not demonic

  • It’s your own desires pulling you

Sometimes you don’t need Satan to tempt you…

you’re doing just fine on your own.

But Satan understands that.

  • He knows your weaknesses

  • He knows your patterns

  • He knows where you tend to fall

And when he gets the opportunity, he exploits what’s already there.

Every day is a choice—old life or new life.

He Still Has Limits (God Sets Them)

Even when Satan is active, he is not free to do whatever he wants.

God sets the boundaries.

Job 1:12 NLT
“All right, you may test him,” the LORD said to Satan. “Do whatever you want with everything he possesses, but don’t harm him physically.” So Satan left the LORD’s presence.

Luke 22:31-32 NLT
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. [32] But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”

Satan had to ask.

That changes everything.

  • He operates by permission, not independence.
  • He is not running wild.
  • He is restrained.

What You’re Actually Called to Do

So what’s your role in all of this?

It’s simpler than most people make it.

James 4:7 NLT
So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Ephesians 6:10-18 NLT
A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. [11] Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. [12] For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. [13] Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. [14] Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. [15] For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. [16] In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. [17] Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. [18] Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

You are called to:

  • Submit to God

  • Resist the devil

  • Stand firm in truth

You are not called to:

  • Panic

  • Live in fear

  • Overanalyze every thought

And you don’t fight for victory.

You stand in the victory Christ already won.

Stop Living in Fear

A lot of Christians are living like Satan is in control.

He’s not.

A lot of Christians are afraid they’re one step away from losing everything.

You’re not.

If you belong to Christ:

  • You are secure

  • You are protected

  • You are not alone

1 John 4:4 NLT
But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.

That settles it.

Satan is real.

But he is not greater than the One who lives in you.

And he never will be.
