Worship through Obedience: Living Your Praise
Introduction: The Heartbeat of Worship
Worship isn’t just something we do—it’s the way we live. While music and praise are beautiful expressions of worship, one of the most powerful and often overlooked forms is obedience.
Obedience is more than rule-following. It’s a declaration that God is worthy of our trust. It’s how we say, “I love You,” not just with our lips, but with our life.
A Story of Surrender: How Obedience Changed My Life
I was 29 years old—a single dad with full custody of my 7-year-old son, Wesley. At the time, I was serving as the Youth Director at my church. I loved that role. I loved pouring into students. But something deeper was stirring inside me.
I was lonely.
There weren’t any women my age in the church. And let’s be honest—being a 29-year-old man with a young son isn’t exactly the world’s most eligible bachelor scenario.
I reached a crossroads.
Do I stay at the church I’m faithfully serving, even though I’m growing more and more isolated? Or do I step away and find a new church home where I might find community—and maybe even companionship?
I prayed.
I wrestled.
And then, God gave me peace about leaving. It wasn’t easy, but I knew in my heart it was the right move.
I turned in my resignation, effective October 31, 1990.
The very next Sunday, I visited Metropolitan Bible Church. That’s where I met Wendy.
By January of 1991, we were spending time together. In March, we started dating. In May, we got engaged. And on November 29, 1991, we were married.
One of the happiest days of my life.
And it all began with obedience.
If I hadn’t listened to God’s prompting, I might never have met her. That’s the power of surrender. That’s the beauty of obedience—it opens doors we can’t see and leads us into blessings we couldn’t imagine.

What Is Worship Through Obedience?
Worship through obedience is choosing God’s will over our own—even when it’s hard, even when it’s unclear, and especially when it costs us something.
Romans 12:1 (NLT) calls us to this:
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him.”
Living sacrifice. That’s not poetic language—it’s a calling to lay down our preferences, our pride, and our plans at His feet.

Obedience Is Trust with Feet On
When we obey, we are saying, “God, I trust You more than I trust myself.” It’s active faith. Worship through obedience means:
-
Forgiving someone before they apologize
-
Being generous when your budget says “don’t”
-
Staying when it would be easier to leave
-
Going when it would be safer to stay
Obedience isn’t glamorous, but it is glorious—because it glorifies Him.

Living Your Praise
It’s easy to raise our hands during a worship song.
But can we raise our hands in surrender on Monday morning?
Can we obey God when no one’s watching?
Can we say yes when it’s uncomfortable?
That’s the kind of worship that moves heaven.
Psalm 51:17 (NLT) reminds us:
“The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.”
When we worship through obedience, we live out our praise. We become the melody and the offering. We become the “living sacrifice.”

Final Thought: What Might God Be Asking of You?
Is there a relationship in your life that needs to end for you to walk in obedience?
Have you been sensing a call from God that you’ve been hesitant to follow?
Is forgiveness still locked away where grace should be flowing freely?
Or are you simply being invited to trust Him more deeply in the season you’re in?
Whatever the situation, obedience is the step that aligns your life with God’s purpose.
Worship through obedience isn’t about perfection—it’s about surrender. It’s a daily choice to place your heart, your plans, and your future in God’s hands.
Let your life become the song that honors Him. Live your praise.
